Spring Fever
Spend a Night in a Backcountry Cabin
Pack your overnight bag and a meal or two, and venture off into the alpine meadows of the mountains surrounding Valemount. In the 1980s, the Yellowhead Outdoor Recreation Association (YORA) started to build cabins in partnership with the Ministry of Forests. The West Ridge Cabin was the first to be built, and it is located in the Cariboo Mountains. Clemina Cabin, in the Monashee Mountains, followed in the late 1980s, and the McKirdy Meadows Cabin, in the Selwyn Range of the Canadian Rockies, was finished in 1993. Today, the volunteers of YORA continue to maintain and manage the use of these rustic cabins.

Off the Beaten Path
Want to explore places where very few have gone? There are many trails throughout the mountains surrounding Valemount, and with this much space you can hike all day and not run into any other hikers.
For some easy hikes, check out Jackman Flats, Cranberry Marsh or Little Lost Lake.
For the serious peak baggers, we recommend Mount McKirdy, Mount Trudeau or Bulldog Ridge Trail.
Stop and Smell the Roses
Wild roses abound in Valemount, as do many other beautiful wildflowers, from Indian Paintbrush, Bunchberries, and lupins, to wild Rhododendrons and Columbine. Visit Art Carson's website to read more about some of our wildflowers and where to find them.
Nothing tastes better than a berry you pick yourself from the wild, and there's no shortage of berries here, from wild cranberries and gooseberries to blueberries, strawberries and Saskatoon berries. The areas to find berries can vary from year to year, so you're best off to ask a local resident where the best spots may be to pick. And when you're picking, don't be too quiet about it - you want the wildlife to know you're there! Beware of bears - they like picking berries too!
